Etheringtons Down Under - 1400 kids Live Show Special!

The main reason we traveled all the way to the other side of the world last month was to perform our live show at the Auckland Writers Festival. To perform five shows, actually, ranging from smaller hands-on masterclass sessions to absolutely MASSIVE gigs!

We'd barely recovered from the crazy jet lag before we found ourselves setting up in the monster ASB Theatre, in Auckland's premier venue, the Aotea Centre. Just look at this widescreen beauty...

Without a doubt it's the biggest stage we've ever encountered, and the biggest crowd we've ever entertained with over 1400 children in the audience! Not only was it the biggest, it was also the friendliest. Right from the very start the laughter was flowing and everyone was involved.

Oh, and if you want to know what 1400 children going completely bananas looks like, here you go ... absolutely amazing.

The signing queue that followed was like a flash mob!

On Sunday we performed public shows in the Herald Theatre. Another completely amazing turnout kept us giggling as we high-kicked our way through two breakneck shows and another round of wonderful signing sessions. We made so many friends on this tour and we're both delighted to know that scores of new readers have been introduced to the fun of Monkey Nuts and Baggage and comics in general.

After all that WORK, a drink was in order! Now, we're rather terrible at snapping pics during the parties and events we attend at these festivals (far too busy gobbling finger food and quaffing wine) but here is a rare shot of us relaxing, following the main gala event. You can barely tell the jetlag has turned us into zombies!

A thousand thanks to festival organisers, Anne O'Brien, Mel Weeks, Jennifer Duval-Smith, Phil Evans, and all the scores of festival support staff who made our live tour such a successful and well run affair. We love you guys!

Just one more NZ report to come later this week ... and it's all about the FUN...

Radio New Zealand - a special interview, Down Under!

We're back! Yep, we've returned from our adventures on the other side of the world with some tales to tell. In fact, there's so much news and fun to share that we'll have to break the trip into multiple posts. Expect bite-sized chunks of kiwi joy over the coming weeks.

First up, a little air play.

For those of you who were unaware, Lorenzo and I were appearing at the Auckland Writer's Festival - a five-day extravaganza of books, authors, talks and laughs.

As part of our visit we'd been offered an interview on Radio New Zealand. Any chance to talk to a wider audience about comics and inspiring kids get's our attention and so it was with great pleasure that we headed to the station.

While waiting to go on air, Lorenzo was persuaded to whip up a couple of Etherington portrait sketches. Keen readers will notice that we both bare a SLIGHT resemblance to Von Doogan!

Then it was down to business. It was business time. Our interview was hosted by Kathryn Ryan, who delivered, in our opinion, one of our best recorded chats ever. And joy of joys, you can here the whole thing right HERE! Simply click the link and listen to us chatter.

Excellent stuff. We'll be back soon with more Auckland treats!

New Zealand, here we come!

We feel a slight apology is needed. In the excitement of working on our books and strips we somehow forgot to mention that we're about to head off on our most far-flung tour, EVER!

Yes, believe it or not, we're heading to New Zealand and the land of the Hobbits. Or, for those who remember our concept web adventure, The Lore of the Things, the land of the Hobbles. Here's Frofro Bagel with a quick reminder and a timely message.

We'll be appearing at the Auckland Writers Festival from the 13th-19th May, hosting school programme workshops and writing masterclasses, but we've two public shows on Sunday 18th, so to all our NZ readers and watchers, if you're in the area come on down and say hi. We'll be signing copies of all our books and generally having a ball.

We Etheringtons shall return soon with lots of photos to share and stories from the road. In the meantime, pick yourself up a copy of Von Doogan's first adventure. That should keep you busy till we get back!

2nd Annual Phoenix Comic Festival is a HIT!

On Saturday 3rd May, the combined forces of The Phoenix comic descended upon Oxford's Story Museum. Our mission: to unleash comic-related mayhem upon a legion of young readers.

It was a mighty, MIGHTY success.

For eight fun-filled hours Lorenzo and I joined our fellow creators to meet, greet and entertain an army of Phoenix fans. Aside from the workshops and talks and presentations and comic jams and sketch-a-thons and myriad other activities, the festival also saw the pre-release launch of the first two titles from the Phoenix Library: Bunny Vs. Monkey, by Jamie Smart, and Lorenzo's Von Doogan. Both brilliant adventures were literally flying off the shelves faster than they could be stacked!

Yes it was a great day, but in all cases such as these (and comics in general) pictures speak better than words. So without further ado, sit back and enjoy a small sample of the day's merriment.

Many thanks to the Phoenix team for creating such a wonderful event - a festival as unique as the comic itself - and for every one of you who turned up to have fun and say hi. Here's to next year - it's going to be a stormer!
